Barbers and Cosmetologists: FAQs

 

Upon completion of training at a board-approved school, you have 12 months to take your exams (practical and written exams). You must also submit the initial licensure fee amount of $100.00 to the board office. Please mail to: Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists, PO Box 25101, Santa Fe, NM  87504

Please complete the reciprocity application, submit the application, jurisprudence exam, and fee. The application and jurisprudence exam can be found on our online licensing portal, NM-PLUS.

If the requirements are similar or exceed New Mexico requirements, please complete a reciprocity application, jurisprudence. Please submit application, jurisprudence exam, and fee to the board office. Upon completion, please contact the testing center, Professional Credentialing Services (PCS), to schedule your exams.

The original issuance of licenses to practice shall be for a period of 2 years or less from the date of issuance. The expiration date is the last day of your birth month.    

The renewal fee is $100.00 for a 2-year period.

Yes, a $40.00 late fee will be added if the renewal is not completed by the expiration date.

No. Permits are issued to the school. The school owner/manager is responsible for maintaining student records/permits. The permits can only be extended for 90 days once a student has successfully completed training.

The application must be approved within 3–5 business days from date of completion.
